Tournament Report: Turkey Tussle - Game 1

I drove out to Infinite Realms in Girard, Ohio for The Turkey Tussle ITS. I brought my Jurisdictional Command of Bakunin for the three game, limited insertion tournament. Game 1 had me up against m14brian's Tartary Army Corps (TAK) in Supplies.

Lists

My list featured a Fireteam: Haris consisting of Kusanagi, a Revered Healer, and a Reverend Custodier, along with a ton of Camo Tokens and a durable Taskmaster Lieutenant.

My hope is that the Zero Minelayers and Reaktion Zond will keep my opponent off of the Tech-Coffins. If he manages to run away with a Supply Box, then Bran gets to play the part of the repo man. The Zero AHD is there to grab boxes when possible, and to hassle any HI or TAGs that will naturally show up in a Limited Insertion tournament (except when playing against Ariadna—d'oh!). For Classified Objectives,  I draw HVT: Espionage and HVT: Kidnapping.

My opponent didn't realize the tournament had the Limited Insertion extra until we shook hands at the table, so he had to scramble to rewrite his list at the last minute. To his credit, what he came up with was tough as nails:

Deployment

My opponent wins the Lt roll and has me deploy first, while I opt to take first turn.

I deploy my Zero Minelayers near the left and center Tech-Coffin, with their mines covering those lanes. My Zero AHD is deployed near the right Tech-Coffin. The Fireteam: Haris consisting of Kusanagi, the Rev. Custodier, and the Rev. Healer is in total cover near the center Tech-Coffin, and the Reaktion Zond is further back covering the central and right lanes. My HVT is at the 16 inch mark in the center left, opposite the Haris.

The Taskmaster is behind a building in the center of my deployment, with one CrazyKoala near him and the other up towards the Haris team. The Stempler Zond is on the left side of my deployment zone, ready to rush the left Tech-Coffin if necessary.  I hold Bran in reserve and let m14brian deploy.

He has a Special Fireteam: Core consisting of the 3 Veteran Kazaks and 2 Frontoviks spread out in the center left (from my perspective) of his deployment zone. A 112 Doctor is deployed in total cover near the Vet Kazak with X-Visor and T2 Rifle, who is furthest forward. On the edge of his line in the center right he has a Dog-Warrior and a Warcor. On his right side, in total cover, he deploys a Camo Token. His HVT is behind the shipping container covering my Zero AHD.

None of his models make particularly good targets for Bran, so I opt to deploy him prone on top of a shipping container near the dead center of the table. Hopefully he'll stay safe long enough for one of his models to become vulnerable. My opponent's reserve model is a Ratnik with Heavy Rocket launchers deployed in a tower in the back left of his deployment zone.

Round 1

Bakunin: I pop the right Tech-Coffin open with my Zero Assault Hacker. The Haris team moves forward into cover and Kusanagi peaks out at the Vet Kazak with T2 rifle.

Five dice are no match for a crit from the T2 rifle, and the two auto-wounds kill her outright. Not good losing my main gunfighter on the second order of the game, so I decide to refocus on the mission. I spend three orders trying to accomplish HVT: Espionage with my Zero AHD (who was conveniently deployed in ZoC of the enemy HVT), but cannot get the job done. At this point I need to brace myself for m14brian's counterpunch, so I drop three mines in a coordinated order and recamouflage with another coordinated order. (It was ruled that opening the Tech-Coffin and picking up the Supply Box required seperate orders, so the Supply Box on the right is just sitting there.) The Rev. Custodier puts Marksmanship: L2 on the Reaktion Zond, and Bran crawls forward into better cover on the roof of the shipping container.

TAK: The Dog-Warrior runs forward and drops a couple of unopposed Smoke Grenades. He then proceeds to clear out both of my oh-so-carefully deployed mines in the center with a skillful Dodge. Oh well, at least they burned an order. It seems the Dog-Warrior and Bran have a bit of a history, because rather than charging into my DZ to wipe out my entire force, he jumps up onto the shipping container next to Bran. Spending another order, he declares an Intuitive Attack against Bran who responds with his Boarding Shotgun. Bran wins the F2F, but the Dog-Warrior shrugs off the attack. He then moves into CC with Bran, and fearing his double Chain Rifles, I chose to dodge. The Dog-Warrior's CC Attack wins the F2F, but Bran makes his save. Content with having Bran tied up, he switches over to the Fireteam, who move up toward the central Tech-Coffin. Along the way, a mine near the left Tech-Coffin detonates on two of the Fireteam members, but they're unscathed. They end the turn covering the central Tech-Coffin, and this is when my opponent realizes (a) he doesn't have any specialists in the team to open the Tech-Coffin, and (b) that the Supply Box I popped is just sitting there on the right...

Round 2

Bakunin: Bran takes a swing at the Dog-Warrior but he shrugs off the armor save and I decide to leave the CC alone for now. The Zero Minelayer in the center of board moves under the shipping container lean-to. The entire Fireteam can see him, but they opt to Hold and so he remains undiscovered and in total cover at the end of the order. Staying in total cover, he drops his final mine covering the Vet Kazak and Frontovik on the central Tech-Coffin. Unable to contain her zeal any longer, the Rev. Healer moves to the very position where Kusanagi was gunned down last turn and takes aim at the Vet Kazak on the Tech-Coffin (who is armed with an AP rifle I believe). The cover and Mimetism mean that I'll probably be fishing for 7's after range modifiers, but the template from her shots will splash onto another Vet Kazak further back and the mine will detonate on the Frontovik. Because of this, I assume he'll opt to dodge making it less risky for the Healer. He surprises me by shooting, but then this happens:

So it seems the Reverend Healer's cause was righteous. This kills the Vet Kazak on the central Tech-Coffin, and puts one wound on the other Vet Kazak.

Unfortunately, the Frontovik tanks his armor save against the mine. The Rev. Custodier updates Marksmanship: L2 on the Reaktion Zond, which then moves into total cover from the Ratnik. In the ensuing F2F, the Ratnik loses a Wound. My intention was to use the Reaktion Zond to try and pick off the Frontovik with the Molotok on the central Tech-Coffin, but I can't engage him without first going through the Vet Kazak with HMG or the Frontovik with AP Sniper Rifle. So in the end I just leave it covering my Zero AHD, who finally manages to accomplish HVT: Espionage. The Zero then moves around the corner of a shipping container away from the Fireteam, kills the Warcor, and drops his second mine.

TAK: The Dog-Warrior attacks Bran with its Impetuous Order, but it's a push. It spends its Irregular Order to take another swing, but Bran wins the F2F and puts a wound him... just what he wanted. Now in Dog Form, he easily kills Bran with a third order. Eyeing my deployment zone, the Dog-Warrior jumps off the shipping container, taking a shot from the Rev. Healer along the way, but he makes his save. Pushing closer, he triggers a CrazyKoala which takes a wound off him, while the Rev. Healer KOs it with her shot.

The Vet Kazak with HMG moves to see the Reaktion Zond and spends an order or two to KO it. The 112 Doctor runs over to be near the Fireteam. The Camo Token in the right side of the deployment zone moves out to see the Zero AHD but does not engage it.

Round 3

Bakunin: Moving the Vet Kazak with HMG has left the Frontovik with Molotok vulnerable. So the Taskmaster uses his Lt order to kill him.

The Zero Minelayer in the center Discover+Shoots the Camo Token, who crosses her fingers that I fail my discover roll and chooses not to ARO. I pass the WIP roll, revealing it to be a TankHunter, and my free shots put her down. The Zero recamouflages before engaging the Frontovik with AP Sniper Rifle, who is now part of a Fireteam consisting of only three members and hence is vulnerable to Surprise Shot. This advantage wins the F2F for the Zero who kills the Frontovik. The Supply Box that has been sitting there since Round 1 is snatched up by the Zero AHD who takes cover near his mines.

With the Fireteam whittled down to only two membes, the Taskmaster is confident enough to take on the Vet Kazak with HMG, which goes down to a crit and a few regular hits. I spend my last order on the Taskmaster trying to finish off the remaining Vet Kazak, who survives but will be under ARO threat from the Taskmaster.

TAK: The 112 Doctor makes a Hail Mary run for the left Tech-Coffin but gets killed by a mine on the way which ends the game.

Final Score

I control one box to my opponent's zero, which nets me six points. I also accomplished HVT: Espionage and switch to Secure HVT at the end of the game, earning me two more points.

Result: 8-0 Bakunin Major Victory

Notes

  • Going after the Vet Kazak with Kusanagi was a foolish risk, T2 ammo or not.
  • A better first turn move would have been to get Bran engaged with the Ratnik, who ended up locking down big swaths of the board with his Heavy Rocket Launcher. Plus, this would have probably pulled the Dog-Warrior away from my deployment zone.
  • I should have put up a better defense for the left Tech-Coffin with either my Zero or Stempler in Suppressive Fire in my final turn.
  • The Taskmaster earned a lot of respect from me this game. He's a competent gunfighter whose two wounds mean I'm comfortable taking risks with him. The range on the Redfury means he'll probably stay out of the action on Round 1, but he shines in later Rounds when the enemy has drawn closer. Also the CrazyKoalas are great for Deployment zone defense.
